Ridiculous Rules

Ridiculous Rules is a self-initiated project that explores antiquated UK by-laws. They are no longer enforced, but still continue to exist today. An example being that it is illegal to hold salmon suspiciously. The design took inspiration from official government documents and keeps a serious tone at first glance. The information laid out in the series of publications contrasts with the tone of the design for an increased comical effect.

Ridiculous Rules was created using found graphics and text. The project was driven by the idea of ‘rule breaking’, which led me to explore old bylaws and the context behind their existence. This publication series showcases both the out-of-context phrase to describe the law, as well as the official text supporting its creation.
